In order to make your project progress
smoothly, please read the following information that
pertains to your job.
Important Information:
Please, have your sink, faucet, accessories, and stove
selected and ordered before scheduling your template.
Colored and/or special order sinks can take up to six
weeks to reach your supplier. Your project cannot be
scheduled for fabrication until under mount sinks with a
template and/or the template for self-rimming sinks are
at our shop.
Elevators, some doorways/hallways, winding staircases,
and upper cabinets may dictate the maximum size of stone
pieces, the number of seams needed, and where those
seams will fall.
If you have a Raised Bar with more than 10” of overhang
(3/4” thickness) or 12” of overhang (1 ¼” or 1 ½”
thickness) we recommend your carpenter install bracing
for support.
Selecting Your Sinks:
We recommend selecting sinks that are only Under mount
or only Self-Rimming. We have maps to two suppliers in
our area that we work closely with, and both have
wonderful showrooms and are very knowledgeable about
specifics for granite applications. We receive
deliveries from other suppliers as well, but please make
sure the supplier/sales person you are working with has
had experience with selling sinks for granite
application.
Dual sinks state they can be used as an Under mount
and/or Self-Rimming sink. An UM/SR sink is so large from
front to back that it CANNOT be applied as an UM to
standard running counter. The options to allow this type
of sink to be under mount require 1) it be applied to an
island or peninsula or 2) your cabinet company adding a
bumped out area at the sink. These types of sinks are
also more complicated to apply than an exclusively UM,
and a charge ranging from $50 to $400 will be added to
your final bill (the amount depends what adjustments
must be made). If you choose to under mount this type of
sink on standard running counter despite our warning, we
cannot be held responsible for and cannot warrant cracks
or breakage in the very thin bridge of material in front
of and behind the sink.
Under mount (UM) sinks must be applied at our shop. A
template for all UM or UM/SR sinks is required! Confirm
with your sink supplier/retailer that a template is in
the box with the sink. If not, you must order it
separately. If no template is provided and we must make
one. Fabrication of your surfaces cannot be started
unless we have all specifics and all UM sinks are at our
shop.
Vessel (VS) sinks must be delivered to our shop.
Fabrication of your surfaces CANNOT be started unless we
have all specifics and your sinks. In some cases,
faucets need to be brought to our shop so placement of
the sink can be determined. Your vessel sink will be
taken to the job site if necessary and then returned to
our shop. You or your plumber may pick it up from our
shop anytime after the hole for it has been cut.
Self-Rimming (SR) sinks are cut in at the job site after
counters are installed and should be at the site when we
come to install. We do not accept SR sinks at our
warehouse, but we do need the sink template sent to us
so that if the sink is not at the site we can still cut
the hole for it. If you have the sink at the time of
templating you should give the sink template to the
templater and he will bring it to the shop. If we must
return to adjust a SR sink hole, a service/trip charge
may be added to your final bill.
Cook tops
Most cook tops must be cut precisely to fit correctly,
so we require the cook tops be at the site when we come
to install. If you have the cook top at the time of
templating, please show it to our templater so any
problems can be determined at templating instead of at
installation. At installation, we will cut the hole for
the cook top, make sure it fits, and then put it back in
its box. If the cook top installer finds it difficult to
insert the cook top into the hole, check that no pipes,
cords, or cabinet walls are obstructing it.
High Splash
If you are having high splash installed, your job will
be done in two phases. If the splash is to go up to a
microwave or hood, make sure the appliance is installed
or mark exactly where it ends so we know where the
granite piece is to stop. Most of the time high splash
cannot be templated until counter tops have been
installed. On average, we install high splash within
five business days after templated. If high splash must
be notched for a raised bar, the raised bar will not be
able to be installed until after the high splash is in.
In addition, depending on the size and shape of the
piece going behind your cook top, we may recommend NOT
cutting for and/or installing the cook top until the
high splash is installed. If high splash is to go up
behind a hood, holes to be drilled must be marked on the
wall and the templater must be informed of the size hole
that must be drilled. These holes MUST be drilled at our
shop and cannot be drilled at the site.
Appliance Garages and Countertop Cabinetry
EM&G does not remove or re-install appliance garages or
cabinets that set on top of your countertops. Having it
removed before templating assures counters will fit
precisely; in the least they must be removed before
installation can be scheduled. Note: If the countertop
being installed is a different thickness than what
existed, the appliance garage or cabinets will need to
be adjusted by your carpenter so they will fit properly
when re-installed.
Scheduling
Most projects include two trips to your job site (one to
template and one to install). If additional trips are to
be needed, make sure your sales consultant is aware of
that. Trips not considered at the time your project was
bid can result in additional service charges being added
to your final bill.
Contact our scheduler about a week before your cabinets
are to be installed so a tentative template date can be
set up. When cabinets are completely set, call our
scheduler and confirm a four-hour window of arrival. All
end panels must be installed and at least one door panel
so proper overhang can be determined.
In rare cases, problems arise during the day and your
template may need to be rescheduled. If this happens,
know that your installation date will not be affected.
On average, the time between template and installation
is 15 to 20 business days. Our knowledge of all
specifics (sink, faucet, accessories, and stove) for
your project BEFORE templating can be a factor in it
being completed earlier.
When you call to schedule your template please have the
following information:
Sink Manufacturer, Model #, and Supplier:
Faucet Manufacturer, Model #, and Supplier:
Accessories (soap or water dispensers):
Stove Manufacturer, Model #, and Supplier:
Once we have spec sheets for the above items we will
call you back if there are options where holes for your
faucet and accessories can be placed. In rare cases,
holes for faucets/accessories on SR sinks must be
drilled through the granite; they are usually drilled
after the counter tops are installed and after the SR
sink is cut. The holes for faucets on UM sinks MUST BE
DRILLED AT OUR SHOP. Consider placement carefully, there
is a $110 per hole charge plus a service charge if
additional holes must be drilled after the job is
complete.
Preparing for template (Remodels)
Please, have entryways to the area cleared to
accommodate for template boards that may be brought in.
Have all temporary tops and/or items cleared from your
counter tops, your sink empty, and remove any wall
hangings that may be damaged if knocked by the template
board. If possible, have any appliance garages or
counter top cabinetry removed.
Preparing for installation (Remodels)
If others are removing your existing tops, arrange to
have them removed by the day before installation is
scheduled. Please, have entryways to the area cleared to
accommodate for large granite pieces being brought in.
If we are tearing out your counter tops, have items
cleared from your counters, your sink empty, and remove
any wall hangings that may be damaged if knocked.
Appliance garages or counter top cabinetry must be
removed. Freestanding or slide in stoves should be
disconnected and moved from the area. Remove items from
drawers around sinks, faucet holes, or cook tops being
cut in at the site. Though we do our best to keep the
dust to a minimum, this is a messy process. Please,
cover anything in the room you are concerned the dust
may hurt.
Our installers can disconnect existing plumbing fixtures
and your dishwasher (if needed) if the main water shut
off is easily accessible. They can also disconnect
electrical wiring to outlets, cook tops, and other
hard-wired appliances affected if needed.
Completing your installation
At your request, we will cover tops with cardboard, but
note that workers coming in after us may not realize the
tops are granite and treat it more roughly.
If your UM sink or Raised Bar has a wood brace beneath
it, DO NOT remove the wood brace for 24 hours. Do not
allow any one to push, pull, or lean on tops or pieces
for 24 hours (if tops become misaligned, seams can
separate and dry, making re-alignment nearly
impossible).
Though we don’t mind disconnecting your plumbing and
electrical, we are not licensed plumbers or
electricians, and we, by law, cannot reconnect any
plumbing, electrical outlets, cooktops, or dishwashers.
Your plumber will need to attach your dishwasher to your
new counter with 3/8” screws and drill them in (at an
angle) into the lattice-like furring strip attached to
the granite above it. Do NOT drill screws in straight,
they will pop the furring strip off and another will
need to be installed (use six-minute epoxy).
ABSOLUTELY, do not allow any one to stand, kneel, or sit
on your countertops.
Clean Up after other trades are done
We recommend and stand behind the Miracle Sealants line
of products for natural stone. If a cleaning crew is
coming in to put the finishing touches on your project,
you may recommend they purchase Mira Clean #1, a
middle-strength cleaner to do the job. They may also use
a razor blade or very fine steel wool (.0000) to remove
surface residue (such as dried paint, glue, or caulk)
from granite surfaces. Your warranty will include
maintenance/care information.
